🧵 Mortal shells are driving all of us crazy. There’s no point in trying to dodge them. Fired in the sky, they travel at a very high arc, reaching their highest point and then falling, pulled down by gravity.

They can be heard approaching, falling in a straight line, and the sound is such that you think they will fall right where you are lying, riveted to the spot.

Thoughts race through your head as you examine your surroundings, always doubting that you’ve chosen the best possible shelter. Of course, everything around you seems better shelter than the spot where you’re lying.

The ICRC has visited the Batković detention camp in Bijeljina. We are aware of reports that the youngest and eldest prisoners, together with the most visibly tortured detainees, could have been temporarily removed from the camp before our arrival.
