Men and women from the undamaged mountain villages gather to sell corn, potatoes and eggs. A single egg would sell for ten Deutschmarks or a kilogram of shucked corn.

as for tobacco, it’s no wonder that almost all the tobacco sellers are armed. Tobacco has reached the price of three thousand marks a kilogram.

Everyone prefers German currency to US dollars; villagers don’t know the exchange rate for the dollar, I guess.

Given that new banknote are not entering Srebrenica, it’s always the same ones being circulated, so even they are worn out and torn.

My family have all of three hundred marks to our name.

As winter approaches in freezing Srebrenica, our houses are without any glass for their windows, due to Serb air-raids. We are covering them with pieces of cloth and blankets. This reminds me of scenes from The Day After and Mad Max 2.

I’ve just been interrogated by the Serb platoon commander in the hall. He held a knife to my throat. Serb soldiers were drinking, singing. They were spitting at me, and tore off my headscarf. (1/2)
