Srebrenica has been liberated by resistance fighters. The work we do at the hospital remains just as agonising. We have no supplies whatsoever.

🧵 Tonight is my first all-night duty at the war hospital in Srebrenica. Currently there is no distribution of tasks; we all take care of the injured.

We are performing surgeries without anaesthesia. Earlier this evening I assisted Dr. Nedret with a stomach surgery for a young man. Holding some cotton wool dabbed with ether over his mouth, we stitched up his intestines.

The young man on whom we operated a few days ago has taken his own life. He jumped out of the hospital window because he couldn’t take the pain. A reminder: we are operating major surgeries without any anaesthetics. These conditions are inhumane.

Don’t be fooled by the UN’s touting of its “demilitarisation” of Srebrenica. The peripheral areas of the municipality remain under constant shell attacks, and even the central areas are shelled from time to time.

🧵 Previously forgotten diseases are inundating Srebrenica due to the inhumane conditions we are living in.

We have many cases of tuberculosis, not to mention skin conditions such as lice, scabies and so on. These skin conditions are everyday occurrences and sometimes we healthcare professionals get infested; it’s unavoidable given that we have barely any water in Srebrenica.

Since the reservoir the town gets its water supply from is located outside the town, in Zeleni Jadar, a village that has been under Serb control from the beginning of the war, we are not sure if the water is safe to use.

We have doubts over whether it has been polluted; we even think it might have been poisoned, so we stopped using it long before the water supply was shut off.
