🧵 I’m working as a translator for the UN. I want to share what happened recently when Serb forces shelled Konjević Polje.

Shells were falling right next to us. A man came up to us crying and distraught, holding a child in each arm. The children were somewhere between six and eight years old. He was distraught, crying and pleading, and I was translating.

The children were in an absolute state of shock, as if they were not aware of what had happened to them. The children’s legs were barely attached to their skin. But they were not crying. They were saying, “Dad, everything’s ok.

Imagine a scene where you’re in a basement, where there’s a bike, a bike with a dynamo. Electricity is being conducted like this; a light bulb is hanging there.

And on a makeshift table lies a woman whose shoulder is destroyed. And the doctor is giving her rakija from a bottle, because he doesn’t have any anaesthetics. He gives her rakija from a bottle so he can amputate her arm.

The woman is screaming, even though she was under the influence of alcohol. And the doctor is crying as he is operating. This is what Serb forces have reduced us to.
