My Dad’s brother has been murdered in Bratunac by Serb paramilitaries. His body was thrown into the river by the Yellow Bridge.

🧵 Oh my God. I’ve just seen my (Serb) neighbour Šarac hand over an automatic rifle to his son-in-law. He was yelling, “Here’s this, my son-in-law, and however many more you need”.

He knew I could hear and see the whole thing. He opened the trunk of his car and I kid you not it was full of ammunition. Why are my Serb neighbours arming themselves? What’s happening?

I’ve just been told by my cousin that my Uncle Zekir was detained in a concentration camp by Serb forces. They released him, only to kill him once they’d driven him to his home. I will never forget my cousin’s sobbing.

I’ve just said goodbye to my husband, Muriz. He held our children in his arms before he left for the woods. I don’t know how long his hug lasted. He put the children down and said, “Šuhra, keep them safe”, as if he knew he’d never see them again. But I’m sure he’ll survive.
