Someone made a makeshift rifle and fired a bullet in the air to celebrate. Big mistake. We were fired upon from surrounding Serb villages with an intensity that can’t be described. The war has started for us. I don’t know where we’ll go.

Today we’re ‘celebrating’ Eid on the hill near the village. It’s all so eery.

We’re in Zvornik. I’m still terrified.

A pleasure to meet with Željko Ražnatović, the leader of Arkan’s Tigers, in Bijeljina today. I thanked him for saving the local Serb population from the Muslim threat. Živjeli nam Arkanovci!

I’ve been to two kiosks in Zvornik, looking for a hunting knife. I need a weapon to protect myself. Both kiosks were out of knives. Luckily the second one had one left. I can’t be the first Muslim who’s thought of arming themselves.

We’re back in Vlasenica. My Serb neighbours are leaving en masse. Their entire families leave in the morning, then their men return wearing uniform and carrying automatic rifles. I’m terrified.

BREAKING: Branko Grujić, head of Zvornik’s Serb ‘crisis staff’, has invited Serbian paramilitary forces to enter the municipality. This would be an invasion similar to the one seen in Bijeljina.

Mum answered the phone to her sister screaming & crying that Chetniks were coming down the hill twds my grandparents’ house (Zvornik), and that they were banging on the door. The telephone connection cut. Mum went into a meltdown that I have never seen from her before. (1/2)

She was shaking all over, crying and screaming, ‘Leave my children alone, leave my children alone!’ By ‘children’ she meant my brother and I. (2/2)
